COMIC REVIEW: WONDER WOMAN #36

WONDER WOMAN #36

REVIEW BY TYLER OCHART

Wonder Woman is a character I have had no interest in, not because I think she is a bad character, I just had no desire to read any of her stories. When I heard Wonder Woman #36 was going to be a start of a new story, I figured I'd give her a try, so I flipped the cover over to the first page with no bias, or no hate towards this character. I started off neutral , and ended unsatisfied.

I knew enough about Diana to know I could come into this story without the need of a lot of details on the character (I keep up with characters I don't even read). What I was presented with was something dull, and something that never hooked me. Wonder Woman sets out to find out the mystery behind the disappearance of a whole entire village, and ends up randomly fighting Swamp Thing because she jumps to conclusions (Women, right?).  We are also left with Wonder Woman struggling to balance her life, between the Justice League and her man hating Amazon warriors. When I finished the last page it redeemed itself with a great cliffhanger that could actually draw me into issue #37. With new writers introduced on this new story line, I feel it wouldn't be fair to the writers to just give up after the first issue, and just like I do with new TV shows, I will definitely give this comic a couple more issues  in hopes it builds up to a great story line.

David Finch is a new name to me, I personally don't know any of his work. The cover is absolutely awesome, it is eye candy. Inside the comic though, I felt it was hit or miss. It had some extremely strong panels, and some so-so ones. The Swamp Thing fight looked awesome, but then the splash page with the Justice League (Pictured above)  looked awkward to me. Seriously, what is up with Superman's head in this one? He has that whole Robert Pattinson, dopey look to him. I am sure Finch is an absolutely amazing artist, so I don't want to say hes awful, he is obviously far from it.

I opened the comic with hopes of finding an interest in Wonder Woman, I finished with no interest in her, but still had that hope that I could become a Wonder Woman fan in the future. She is a hugely influential superhero, and a classic, and I would love to become a fan. So here is to hoping Diana can lasso me in in the future.

2.5/5.0
