COMIC REVIEW: SPIDER-WOMAN #1

SPIDER-WOMAN #1

REVIEW BY ALBERTO TORRES

For someone who is unfamiliar with Spider-Woman, and most of the Spider-verse in general, I approached Spider-Woman #1 with hopes to learn about a previously unfamiliar character. Unfortunately, what I was shown instead was an issue #1 that gave little-to-no back story on the character at all. It begins with Spider-Woman and her even-more-unfamiliar-side-kick-ish companion Silk riding through the desert on top of dinosaur-like creatures with prohibition-era Spider-Man. The first two pages set the premise for the rest of the comic, as we learn the most about the characters in these segments. From what I could pick up: Silk is a fun-loving character who wants to make the most of the situation she is in; whereas Spider-Woman is more of the "adult" and does her best to keep Silk disciplined. Prohibition Spider-Man makes little impression with his very limited presence in the comic entirely. And this theme seems to continue throughout the rest of the 30-odd pages with no real developing story.

I did some research as to why this beginning of a new series seemed so lacking in back story, and it's because the writers chose to simply continue the story of the Spider-Multi-Verse right off the bat in this comic. So, you would need to already have a vast knowledge of the Spider-verse and have read the previous comics to understand this comic completely. I find that to be a poor choice on the writers' end, especially for an issue #1.

The art was the saving factor for this comic. It was very well done and pleasing to the eye. The characters were vibrant yet kept to the broody atmosphere.

The comic as a whole was dull, with no real information on the characters involved. Though there were one or two moments at the start that gave me a slight chuckle, the poor writing made it hard to enjoy this comic.
